I realize that I talk about food too much

For some reason I just can’t help myself:

We were at a Japanese restaurant called Izakaya

We were at a Japanese restaurant called Izakaya

For a while now, we have been wanting to check out this Japanese restaurant on the 3rd floor of a building downtown.  It was good.  The place was decorated with empty boxes of food products and old Saki bottles.  It was a fun atmosphere.  What drew me in though, was a craving for a Dragon Roll.  It turned out to be a completely different Dragon Roll than what I was expecting, but it was still good.  I love eel.  It was missing avocado though… but I haven’t really seen much avocado at all since I’ve been here.

I think that this looks like a plate of fish… but underneath all that stuff is a sushi roll.  It came served with pearl onions, cherry tomatoes and sweet pickles.  Very weird.  On top of the roll is eel (yummy), squid flakes (not soo yummy), and roe.    The only thing that I was upset about was that I could not get soy sauce or wasabi.  The waitress did not speak English, but still understood what I was asking… she said that it was to be eaten “No sauce” and she would not bring me any.  Oh well…

Yongsan IMAX

We wanted to see Star Trek and decided IMAX was the way to go.  I’m glad we took the time to head into Seoul to see this movie.  Star Trek was amazing, in case you were wondering.   The IMAX is located in Yongsan…. also, quite easy to find since the mall is connected to the Station.

I love how most of the malls here have fabulous outdoor areas within the complex center.  This mall was laid out in a square and this concourse was being used for some Mother’s Day festivities.  They were playing music and games.

We also found a fun little Sushi restaurant… with one of those sushi “trains” that I find so fascinating.  This place had ‘Japanese Fusion’ on the window.  I’m not sure what made it a fusion restaurant other than the fact that on the train, amidst all the sushi, was strawberry pie. … which I know is not a Japanese dessert.

Sushi is Yummy

Koreans say that sushi was a stolen idea.  They say that Japan took their idea and told the rest of the world it was their own.  I have no idea where sushi originally came from… but I love it all the same.  Thank you to whoever it was that decided to roll various vegetables and meat in rice and seaweed…. genius.

Kimbap is the Korean version of what I would call sushi.  It is very simple.  When I think of sushi I think of the Dragon Roll or Philadelphia Roll…. or any sushi dipped in wasabi mixed with soy sauce.  Somedays it’s the wasabi  that I crave and not even the sushi.

Kimbap isn’t as flashy as sushi… but still very tasty.  It’s also very cheap.  I can get an entire kimbap roll for about $1.  There’s even a 24 hour place on the first floor of the apartment building… it comes in handy.

Here in Sanbon there is a really good sushi restaurant that serves “California Sushi”.

It’s weird because here in Korea they put these strange sauces on every sushi roll.  The roll on the right (what a typical roll looks like here)  is covered in shredded cabbage, almonds, and a sweet sauce.  The roll that is behind the octopus is covered in a mustard sauce, fish eggs, and avocado.   Sometimes I get this green sauce that I thought was going to be a wasabi sauce at first… turned out to be a kiwi pineapple sauce.  This is not quite like the Spicy Tuna Roll that I love soo much back home… but I haven’t been to Japan yet, so I don’t really know what “real” sushi is, as of now.  It’s on my list of things to see/eat while I’m over here.
